The Recovery Act: The most important energy bill in American history
Obama has failed to lead on climate, but his clean energy achievements are impressive. CAP’s Bracken Hendricks and Jorge Madrid look at his biggest success in a repost . Don’t miss the chart below comparing the U.S. stimulus with that of other countries If the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) had been an energy bill, it would arguably have been the single-most important piece of clean energy legislation in our nation’s history. It drove unprecedented new investments — both public and private — into modernizing America’s clean energy infrastructure. And its clean energy provisions alone have already saved or created 63,000 jobs and are expected to create more than 700,000 jobs by 2012 . Now that ARRA has run its course, we need to stay committed to these investments to keep building the U.S

UK grocery chain tests smart-grid system
UK grocery chain Sainsbury’s is trying out new technology to monitor one of its stores’ impact on the national electricity grid. The new store in Hythe, Kent, will feature a system that activates a biofuel generator during times of peak demand on the grid. The technology is aimed at reducing the need to fire up fossil-fuel-driven reserve power stations and limiting extra carbon emissions.

A half-million smart meters have been installed across the Australian state of Victoria, and the rollout program has also helped to identify and repair about 3,500 previously existing electrical defects in homes. “In almost all cases this has been the first indication for customers that they have any problems, and they were only identified because of the smart meter rollout,” said Shane Breheny, chairman of the Energy Networks Association, which represents Victoria’s electricity distribution and transmission businesses. “It’s an extra safety dividend being delivered to the community by the smart meter program.” Read more here … Related posts: Smart meter rollout = 2,600 new jobs Swedish utility readies smart-meter rollout Smart meter rollout to reach $25bn in Europe by 2020, says Greenbang

Panel gives nod to smart-grid data standard
A panel considering interoperability issues for the smart grid has come out in favour of a new standard to two-way data communications between utilities and their customers. The governing board of the public-private Smart Grid Interoperability Panel gave its nod to a new “energy usage data model” standard that will enable the exchange of detailed information about electricity usage in a consistent format. The decision brings the next-generation “smart” electrical power grid one step closer to reality, according to the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Developed through the North American Energy Standards Board’s (NAESB) American National Standards Institute-accredited process, the model will be included in NAESB’s filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission next month. ABB to help link Norwegian, Danish grids
Power and automation technology group ABB has won a $180 million order to help support the interconnection of the Norwegian and Danish power grids. The underwater link will boost transmission capacity between the mainly hydroelectric-based Norwegian system operated by Statnett and the wind and thermal power-based system operated by Energinet.dk. It will enable both networks to add more renewable energy to their energy mix, and to use electricity more efficiently.
