For EPA regulations, benefits consistently exceed costs . So this ThinkProgress cross-post will take you down the right-wing rabbit hole and make you hopping mad. Fossil fuel-burning industries, particularly coal and oil companies, have pursued an aggressive political strategy to ensure that they do not have to pay for any of their pollution. For instance, these companies have funded a vast network of “ libertarian ” and “ conservative ” front groups to spread the lie that climate change is not real, that regulations on pollution destroy the economy, and other fraudulent arguments to pad the profits of polluters. In the 2010 midterm elections, oil and coal companies, like Peabody and Koch Industries, poured a record amount of campaign contributions into electing pro-polluter Republicans. Now, it appears that the new polluter-funded GOP majority will be repaying the favor. Sunday night on Tea Party Internet radio, Rep.-elect Bill Flores (R-TX) explained that Republicans “as a whole want to get the EPA shut down” on regulations: FLORES: Absolutely, that’s one of the reasons I wanted to get on Natural Resources is it puts me in the position, not my full jurisdiction over the EPA but I do have some jurisdiction there

It might be better titled, “A tale of two generations.” It is palindromic — so be sure to watch it until the end: Yes, it’s not new — it has nearly 15 million views. But it’s still poignant. It’d be very interesting to do something like this just for climate and clean energy. If someone put such a video together, I’d be delighted to run it.

Carbon trading is a popular concept and scheme in Europe, however, the same cannot be said regarding the United States. Carbon trading is considered a good strategy towards reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions amongst industries. A recent decision made in California may lead the way in making carbon trading a popular endeavor in the U.S.
Climate peacock Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) threatened to tie up the funding of the government with his coal-powered campaign to kill climate action before the end of the year. But the Republicans killed the effort so that they could take the lead on it in 2011! First, Brad Johnson explains what Rockefeller tried to do: In a press release issued Thursday, Rockefeller said that he is willing to try to “ suspend the rules on the Omnibus Appropriations bill” to force a 2/3 vote for his “Dirty Air Act” amendment, which would stall EPA rules on global warming polluters until 2014: “The time has come for us to make a decision on the energy future of our country. I have spent this year fighting to make sure that Congress, not the EPA, determines how best to reduce greenhouse gases in a way that protects West Virginia’s economy. While there are still ongoing discussions about how Congress should proceed, I want to make it clear that I intend to get a vote this year on my EPA-suspension legislation . I know there is bipartisan support for this legislation, and if necessary, I will seek to suspend the rules and bring this up for a vote

This morning I cycled to work through the newly settled snow and for the first time this year – found myself in the winter holiday spirit. Here in Amsterdam at the Greenpeace International office – we’re surrounded by a snowy white cityscape. Some folks are working from home while others are already on holiday but for those of us in the office today – the atmosphere is nothing but festive. A few of my colleagues even took a break from working at their desk to spread a little Yuletide cheer – just for you. OK – now let’s get down to business! For many of us – it’s nearly time for the holidays and by now you may already have all the gifts, decorations and food prepared and planned but if you’re like me – you haven’t even started yet. Most of us turn into super consumers around now, rushing to the shops often without thinking much about the ecological impacts of our purchases.
