What the Energy Professionals Think
ABB commissioned a survey of energy professionals to look at how they see energy usage, the environment and the government’s role in enforcing environmental rules and the opportunities and the barriers. The survey was carried out by Bloomberg Businessweek and it seems that energy professionals are a fairly switched on group. 89% of these professionals believe government incentives are better than markets for driving energy efficiency uptakes for end users. Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas and a precursor to compounds that contribute to the destruction of the ozone. Intensively managed, grazed pastures are responsible for an increase in nitrous oxide emissions from grazing animals’ excrement. Biochar is potentially a mitigation option for reducing the world’s elevated carbon dioxide emissions, since the embodied carbon can be sequestered in the soil. Biochar also has the potential to beneficially alter soil nitrogen transformations. It’s science Sunday, so I’m reprinting this news release from the American Society of Agronomy. It’s the short, readable version of the full study , “Biochar Incorporation into Pasture Soil Suppresses in situ Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Ruminant Urine Patches.” Many readers have expressed interested in biochar (aka “ charcoal created by pyrolysis of biomass ” aka “a C-rich product that is manufactured by thermal decomposition of organic material under a limited oxygen supply at relatively low temperatures (

Is the White House, in the quest for a budget deal, quietly preparing to accept some aspects of a House GOP effort to roll back the regulatory power of the Environmental Protection Agency, which would represent a significant weakening of the Obama adminstration’s commitment to combat global warming? So reported the Associated Press, but in a statement sent my way, the White House is denying it ….
