Earth Day, then and now
To mark Earth Day, Jones Soda Co. reduced its electrical needs for the day so that about 10 riders on bikes attached to generators can provide power all day for the beverage-maker’s operations. Here’s a brief history Earth Day, reposted from CAP. Earth Day was founded at a time when laws protecting the environment were either weak or nonexistent, and manufacturers were more or less unrestricted in recklessly polluting the environment. Sen. Gaylord Nelson founded the holiday in 1970 as a way of forcing his fellow representatives in government to recognize the growing contingency of Americans who felt strongly the need to protect the environment for future generations. Nelson’s idea caught on quickly—more than 20 million people around the country took to the streets and demonstrated on the occasion of the inaugural Earth Day

Operator suspends fracking in state As a natural gas well in Bradford County continued to leak super-salty flow-back water after a blowout Wednesday, well operator Chesapeake Energy suspended all hydraulic fracturing operations in Pennsylvania on Thursday. The leak, which began in an accident Tuesday night, produced water and natural gas until about 10 p.m. Thursday, when Chesapeake said it had stopped the flow. Chesapeake’s Atgas H2 gas well in LeRoy Township, near Canton, suffered a blowout when a piece of equipment failed during hydraulic fracturing just before midnight Tuesday into Wednesday, sending a reported 30,000 gallons of water spilling from the well pad, some of it reaching a tributary of Towanda Creek

by Jess Zimmerman. Are you rallying in D.C. right now for the Power Shift 2011? You’re NOT? Well, lucky for you we’ve been posting highlights over the weekend. Here’s what you missed, you poor sap: Former White House advisor Van Jones wants to hold both parties to high standards, but he’s not sure they’ll live up to it. Luckily, the kids are all right.

Budget battle torpedoes NOAA Climate Service
By Michael Conathan, CAP’s Director of Ocean Programs The EPA’s efforts to regulate greenhouse gasses as a pollutant under the Clean Air Act survived the FY11 budget battle. But climate hawks came out on the short end of another, lower-profile but no less vital, struggle related to the climate monitoring efforts of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA. E&E’s Greenwire (subs. req’d) reported today on an overlooked rider to H.R. 1 and also included in the final deal on the full year continuing resolution that the House and Senate will vote on this week: The continuing resolution that would fund the government through the end of September would block funding for a new National Climate Service and any new catch-share fishery programs — the two keystone efforts from NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco. Details of the resolution were announced early this morning…. If lawmakers include similar language in fiscal 2012 spending bill, it could halt the effort to create the new agency, which would be akin to the National Weather Service. The idea for a climate service first arose during the waning days of the George W.
